The actor-turned-author recently spoke to students from afar at Virginia Commonwealth University on the topic of overcoming trauma and writing his bestselling book. He spoke to them about his acting career and why he got into the industry. “There’s kind of the pressure of just having to do it for the family which I think helps me to finally start to get over the nerves because I know that there’s something bigger for me to work on,” he said. “But I never really liked it.”

He eventually left acting and pursued writing as a career. “I think success doesn’t matter if you don’t feel connected to what you’re doing,” he told the students. “I don’t think money matters if you don’t believe in what you’re doing.”

McCurdy also discussed mental health awareness, as that is something she is passionate about. She explained that she wanted to portray eating disorders in a way that included some humor because when she was struggling, all she could find to read about the topic were self-help books.
