On Thursday, the Australian dancer took to Instagram to pay tribute to the late talk show host. “My heart is completely broken,” she wrote alongside several photos of the late talk show host. “Jerry is many things… Mayor, politician, anchor, icon, tv host, best friend, great singer and pretty good dancer! But mostly, a very loving family man.”
“He loved his family more than anything and my heart goes out to his beautiful wife Micki and his daughter Katie and his grandson who is the apple of his eye,” he continued. Although Jerry was married to Micki from 1973 to 1994, many suspected that they had remarried, as Jerry often referred to her as “my wife” in previous interviews. However, it has not been confirmed.

“I met Jerry when I first came to the US for my first season with DWTS,” she continued. “I was lucky enough to be paired with Jerry and I immediately adored him. He became like a father figure to me. He’s very smart, kind, self-deprecating, and just a great guy. She wants to do DWTS to learn to dance for her daughter’s wedding! I will cherish the memories of teaching Katie and Jerry the waltz for her wedding for the rest of my life. Their love for each other is so beautiful.”
“He will be missed but I feel very blessed to have known him as I did,” he concluded. “Rest in peace, Jerry.”

Jerry Springer appeared on the show’s third season in 2006 and has partnered with Australian professional dancer Kym Johnson-Herjavec. The two performed a Paso Doble to Charlotte Church’s “Habañera” and another to Patti Page’s “Tennessee Waltz.”
“Dancing With The Stars” judge Len Goodman, who died Saturday of bone cancer at age 78, told PEOPLE that Jerry had “hoped to stay on [the competition] long enough so she can learn to waltz and dance at her daughter’s wedding.”

Jerry was eliminated from the show in fifth place, but he admitted that the show “turned out to be really fun” in an interview with the Behind the Velvet Rope podcast last year.
“I will never do it again because I realize how difficult it is,” he said at the time. “What’s fun is that I’m out of my comfort zone. And I, as much as possible, try to turn it into my comfort zone by instead of selling my dance, which is hopeless, I’ll joke. … I will continue to plead every week, ‘Please don’t vote for me.’”

In a statement to PEOPLE, longtime family friend and spokeswoman Jene Galvin revealed that plans for a funeral and memorial gathering are in the works as she credits Jerry’s ability to connect with people for his success, both in front of and behind the camera. .
“Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether it was politics, broadcasting or just joking around with people on the street who wanted a picture or a word,” Galvin said. “He was irreplaceable and his loss is painful, but memories of his wit, heart and humor will live on.”
The statement continued, “Funeral services and memorial gatherings are being developed. In memory of Jerry, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, you consider following his spirit and making a donation or commit to doing good to someone in need or a worthy advocacy organization. As he always said, ‘Take care of yourself, and each other.'”
