‘We Don’t Know Each Other Enough’
During her recent appearance on “Watch What Happens Live,” Kelly Clarkson addressed and denied any speculation about a rumored feud between her and fellow “American Idol” winner Carrie Underwood. Clarkson, who emerged victorious in the show’s inaugural season, expressed her dismay at the assumptions made about their relationship.
“We don’t know each other well enough to go against each other [each other,]” explained Clarkson. “Literally, we’ve been face to face a few times, and there’s no beef between us. There was nothing between us — we didn’t know each other. We’ve actually bumped into each other a few times.”

Clarkson’s comments about Underwood were in response to members of the virtual audience who had raised speculation of a feud between the two artists while asking questions. After Clarkson brushed off rumors of a beef, host Andy Cohen asked callers to take their questions. The audience member continued, “What’s your favorite part about him being a guest on your talk show?”
Amid laughter, Clarkson said, per Many people, “It was great! It was great to have him on the show. I think the interesting thing about it is that everyone is always pitting us against each other, and I don’t know why they do that.”
He added, “They don’t do that with men. They only do it with women. And I was like, we don’t know each other enough to do that. But I guess… I’d like him to be there in person! It’s during COVID, so it’s over Zoom, which is good, but it’s going to be cold.

The lack of tension between the “Idol” veterans is not a new revelation. Back in April 2018, Clarkson and Underwood denied any notion of competition. In response to a Twitter poll asking which singer was “the most iconic,” Clarkson took the opportunity to celebrate their individual successes, stating, “I think we both won in life and are pretty blessed!”
Underwood echoed the sentiment of support, responding to the poll by expressing her solidarity with Clarkson, saying, “Whatever, girl, I’m voting for you! But seriously, I wish more publications would celebrate women’s successes without pitting each other against each other.”

Clarkson’s immediate response was an exclamation of surprise, followed by a momentary pause as he tried to remember the recent winner. Despite her best efforts, she was unable to name any champions from the show’s 2018 revival, which featured Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie as judges.
