Meet Landra Gould Reid, Harry Reid’s Wife
Harry Reid, the former Senate majority leader and longest-serving member of Congress from Nevada, has died. He was 82 years old then. His wife Landra Gould Reid confirmed the death and revealed that he breathed his last surrounded by friends and family.
Harry has been battling pancreatic cancer for four years. Reid in May 2018 revealed he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was undergoing treatment.
Landra revealed, “Harry was a devoted family man and a very loyal friend. We appreciate the outpouring of support from so many over the last few years. We are so grateful to the doctors and nurses who cared for him. Please know it means the world for him.”
Harry is known as the toughest deal maker in Congress. A conservative Democrat in an increasingly politicized chamber with a crass attitude and this motto frustrated lawmakers from both parties, “I’d rather dance than fight, but I know how to fight.”
His Washington career flourished for 34 years behind the scenes. He kept the Senate controlled by his party through two presidents — Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Barack Obama — a crippling economic recession and a Republican takeover of the House after the 2010 election.
However, he retired in 2016 and was left blind in one eye.
Harry Reid was born on December 2, 1939 in Searchlight, Nevada, to an alcoholic father who committed suicide at the age of 58 and a mother who worked as a cleaner in a brothel. He grew up in a small cabin with no running water and swam with other children in the local brothel pool.
In his book, Harry wrote: “I love my parents very much. They give life everything they have. But no child should be brought up like I was brought up.”
He hitchhiked 40 miles from home to Elementary High School in Henderson, Nevada.
Harry Reid was elected to the Nevada Assembly at age 28 and, at age 30, became Nevada’s youngest lieutenant governor as Governor Mike O’Callaghan’s running mate in 1970. But, as a young lawyer, he prided himself on taking on cases that disliked by society, such as prostitutes and cocktail waitresses.
He also served on the state gambling commission during the early days of Las Vegas as a mecca for gambling (and organized crime). Landra found a bomb attached to the engine of the family’s station wagon near the end of his stint at the commission.

Harry and Landra Gould Reid met each other in Henderson, Nevada while attending high school where Landra was a sophomore.
“He was wearing shorts, I remember that. And he was washing the family car,” Harry said in his book, “The Good Fight,” of the day he met his future wife, then Landra Gould. Reid was only a junior in high school, and he was a sophomore. “And I thought, wow, that’s a pretty good car washer.”
Harry borrows his friend’s car to drive him to the movies on their first date, but it doesn’t have a starter, so they both turn it down. They both laughed it off, according to Reid. “There are moments that change life, and that stay with you until your last breath,” Reid recalls. “That was one of those moments for me.”
Once when he went to pick her up for a date, Landra’s father was so against it, and Reid was so determined, the ex-boxer punched him. He punched his future father-in-law in the face. Part of the problem was that he was Jewish. Reid told in 2006, “When our relationship started, her parents realized that it could be something serious and it was a very difficult time, the last few years of courtship because they, of course, wanted her to meet someone Jewish”
In an interview with CNN, Harry boasted, “He’s never changed. He is 74 years old. She could win a beauty pageant today.”
The couple tied the knot on September 12, 1959 in Utah where Harry had earned a scholarship to a junior college. The couple joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at Utah State University. They embraced Mormonism together after joining the church.
Together, they eventually had four sons; Rory Reid, Leif Reid, Key Reid and Josh Reid and a daughter named Lana Barringer Reid. His son Josh was born two months after Harry buried his father.
In March 2010, Harry’s wife Landra and daughter Lana had an accident. Landa underwent surgery after breaking his neck and back due to a road accident. At a news briefing on Friday, Dr. Elizabeth Franco of Fairfax Inova Hospital’s Trauma Intensive Care Team claims the senator’s wife can move her arms and legs and the possible paralysis has disappeared.

Throughout Landra Gould Reid’s life with her husband Harry, she served as his advisor. Harry never made any decisions without her input. He served as her closest confidant and primary advisor.
Harry wrote of his election night discussion, “We’ve been together since high school, so of course, no important decision would have happened without him. In times of success and hardship, Landra is the first person I turn to.”
In September 2011, a medical diagnosis revealed that Landa had stage II breast cancer. He underwent treatment for the disease including chemotherapy at an undisclosed Washington, DC area facility. Sources close to Harry shared that his wife’s illness will not affect Reid’s ability to carry out his duties as majority leader.
