In Octopus Game: Challenge there LeAnn Wilcox Plutnicki and Trey Plutnicki appear as a mother-son pair. Throughout the competition, the two supported each other until they had to make a final decision because there was only one winner.
LeAnn’s on-screen storyline includes a solid partnership with Trey, but there are also a few other moments where she stands out as a formidable opponent in her own right. He never wavers from the ideals he holds so strongly, whether it’s forming strange partnerships or speaking up for what he believes in.
After all, he is in the race to win it all. LeAnn’s main motivation for entering the “Octopus Game: Challenge” was to convince herself that she had the necessary skills to complete the difficult task. He has always been interested in sports, so even though he is a well-known journalist, he focuses on sports-related subjects.
“I always have the ball in my hands. I never had a doll. I didn’t see the point of dolls, so I played sports,” LeAnn said in the series. “My mother is an athlete. My mom was a really great athlete for her time, and I played a few sports in high school and younger, but I ended up going to college. I went to Kansas State University, where I was the first woman to receive a full basketball scholarship there.”

LeAnn Wilcox met her husband Ken Plutnicki when she was working at The Miami Herald. Their paths crossed in a pick-up basketball game — “literally and figuratively.” Every year married couples celebrate their anniversary in May.
Now 61 years old, Ken has worked at The New York Times as a staff editor.
In addition to Trey, LeAnn and Ken have two other daughters. They are Alexandria and Emma Plutnicki.

The athleticism LeAnn displayed in the show should come as no surprise. She started by being the first women’s basketball player at K-State, went on to earn a full scholarship, and pursued a career in journalism that landed her at the New York Times. His life journey has been full of “great changes,” as he calls it.
He grew up there, eventually developing into a star athlete at St. Mary in Independence, Missouri. She earned her first full scholarship offer for women’s basketball at K-State and Kansas after being courted by several colleges.
LeAnn chose K-State, where she played from 1976-80 in the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW).
After graduating from K-State in 1980, Wilcox was drafted in the ninth round by the Milwaukee Express of the Women’s Professional Basketball League. Because of a history of knee injuries, however, Wilcox decided to move away from basketball and began his career as a journalist.
LeAnn said, “Cathie Burnes, who used to be a reporter at St. Louis Post Dispatch and also in Kansas City Star, he interviewed me when I was in high school, and I was very interested in his work and he explained a lot while he sat on my living room couch. That was probably when I thought, ‘I think that would be really fun. That would be a very interesting job to have.’”
LeAnn began working as a sports reporter/editor for The Kansas City Star in 1984 and stayed there until 1989. She worked at the Miami Herald at the time as a copy editor and page designer, but she quit to take a new position. LeAnn’s career began as soon as she was hired as a Senior Editor at the New York Times in 1991. Throughout her career in the media, she worked in various sectors, but her main interest seemed to be sports.
LeAnn also works as a staff editor at The New York Times. He is retired now.
