Live Nation Places Blame On Taylor Swift’s Popularity For Ticketmaster Debacle

A response has been given regarding the ongoing controversy over Taylor Swift concert tickets.

Tickets for Swift’s first stadium concert tour in half a decade went on sale earlier this week and demand for tickets has been called ‘unprecedented’ by Ticketmaster. The store has also come under fire for unexpected technical glitches related to ticket acquisition, and its response to the issue.

Frustration was so widespread that US lawmakers stepped in and called for a complete overhaul of Ticketmaster’s practices.

Senator Amy Klobuchar wrote a letter to the CEO and President of Ticketmaster parent company Live Nation Entertainment Inc., Michael Rapino, asking several questions regarding his current and future practices. The Tennessee Attorney General also joined Klobuchar in seeking more information about various components related to Ticketmaster’s business practices.

Live Nation Partial Owner and Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei has responded to the backlash.

The outlet soon addressed the situation in a tweet, offering multiple reasons behind the issue caused by “high demand” for tickets. The Captial One (the sponsor behind the tour) Presale as well had to be rescheduled due to demand.

Public Figures Respond to ControversiesTaylor Swift 3

The conversation about Ticketmaster will soon expand from just about Swift’s tour, to a larger discussion about the outlet’s practices in general.

Economist Robert Reich weighed in Thursday afternoon, tweeting, “Having trouble buying Taylor Swift tickets? Blame Ticketmaster. They have a monopoly on the live events industry, which allows them to get away with providing poor service, overcharging tickets and charging unnecessary service fees.”

US Senator Richard Blumenthal expressed his displeasure on Twitter as well. Senator Connecticut write, “Taylor Swift’s tour sales are a perfect example of how the Live Nation/Ticketmaster merger is harming consumers by creating a near monopoly. I have long urged the DOJ to investigate the state of competition in the ticketing industry. Consumers deserve better than this ‘anti-hero’ behavior.”

As of this writing, neither Swift nor her management team, Taylor Nation, have responded to the controversy- a move her fans have been asking to be corrected.

“Taylor or taylor nation better release a statement now it’s crazy what we’re doing,” a Ask Twitter users.

“The fact that all taylor country has done is retweet the ticket master’s tweet is ridiculous,” shouted another.

Ticketmaster Cancels Upcoming ‘Public Onsale’ For ‘Eras’ Tickets

Due to extremely high demand on the ticketing system and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand, tomorrow’s public sale for the Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour has been cancelled.

— Ticketmaster (@Ticketmaster) November 17, 2022

As of noon today, Ticketmaster will no longer be holding a “public sale” for Swift’s tour on Friday, November 18.

The outlet tweeted, “Due to extremely high demand on the ticketing system and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand, tomorrow’s public sale for the Taylor Swift|The Eras Tour has been cancelled.”

The announcement came after Liberty Media CEO and Live Nation part-owner Greg Maffei revealed his stance on the increasing amount of scrutiny surrounding Ticketmaster.

Maffei spoke to CNBC, doubling down on the company’s stance on ticket requests.

“The reality is it’s a function of Taylor Swift’s huge demand. The site should be open to Taylor Swift’s 1.5 million verified fans. We had 14 million people hit the site – including boats, another story, that shouldn’t be there – and despite all the challenges and all the damage, we sold over 2 million tickets that day,” said Maffei. “We can fill 900 stadiums. And the reality is this is not a Live Nation affiliate concert. Taylor Swift was promoted by one of our biggest competitors. So even AOC [Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, who tweeted about the controversy] may not like every element of our business, interestingly AEG- our competitor, who is the promoter for Taylor Swift- chose to use us because we are, in fact, the biggest and most effective ticket seller in the world. Even our competitors want to come to our platform,” Maffei concluded. (per Stereogum)
