He was born on December 12, 1840, in Albemarle County, Virginia to Baptist parents named Edward Harris and Anna Maria Barclay. He grew up in a large and wealthy family. He grew up as a child in the old South. She is the 4th in a family of 5 girls and 2 boys. He was only 13 years old when his father died in a riverboat accident.
Education was everything to her and at age 14, she attended the Baptist-affiliated Virginia Female Seminary, a high school. She also attended the Albemarle Women’s Institute in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Lottie Moon earned one of the first Master of Arts degrees in 1961, awarded to a woman by a southern institution. The most interesting thing about Lottie Moon is that she learned many languages such as Greek, Latin, French and Italian. Later, he will be proficient in Chinese.
Lottie Moon’s Spiritual Awakening
She is a loud and passionate girl. He was indifferent to his Christian childhood until his early teens. Lottie Moon experienced a spiritual awakening while attending a revival meeting on a college campus. He helped his mother manage the family estate throughout the war.
After that, Lottie started a teaching career. She has reached women’s academies including Danville (Kentucky). He and Anna Safford (his friend) started the Cartersville Female High School in 1871. He also joined the First Baptist Church and ministered to underprivileged families in Bartow County, Georgia.
His sister Orianna began serving as a Confederate Army doctor during the American Civil War. To the family’s surprise, Edmonia (her younger sister) accepted a call to live in North China as the first single woman Baptist minister in 1872.
Soon he felt called to follow Edmonia to China. He was officially appointed as a minister to China by the Foreign Mission Board at the age of 32.
Ministry work in China
He joined his sister at the North China Mission Station at the treaty port of Dengzhou in Shandong. This is how Lottie Moon began her ministry by teaching at a boys’ school. She discovered her passion for direct evangelism when she accompanied some experienced ministry wives on ‘country visits’ to remote villages.
During his missionary work, Lottie Moon felt chained and came to him as part of the burdened class of single women missionaries. Moon’s writing is a plea on behalf of all those who are faced with similar situations in their missions.
In 1885, he stopped teaching and moved to the center to evangelize full-time in Hwangshien and Pingtu provinces. He continued a prolific writing campaign. This is how his articles and letters describe the life of a ministry and plead the ‘urgent need’ for more ministries.
But the poorly funded board can’t deliver. She motivated Baptist women to organize mission groups in local churches to help in supporting additional ministry candidates and also to consider coming themselves. He works to promote the mission and raise funds to support the mission.
She was instrumental in the creation of The Woman’s Missionary Union, which was an aid to the Southern Baptist Convention in 1888. In 1892, she took a much-needed leave of absence in the United States and did so again in 1902.
