His sister Orianna began serving as a Confederate Army doctor during the American Civil War. To the family’s surprise, Edmonia (her younger sister) accepted a call to live in North China as the first single woman Baptist minister in 1872.

In 1885, he stopped teaching and moved to the center to evangelize full-time in Hwangshien and Pingtu provinces. He continued a prolific writing campaign. This is how his articles and letters describe the life of a ministry and plead the ‘urgent need’ for more ministries.

But the poorly funded board can’t deliver. She motivated Baptist women to organize mission groups in local churches to help in supporting additional ministry candidates and also to consider coming themselves. He works to promote the mission and raise funds to support the mission.

She was instrumental in the creation of The Woman’s Missionary Union, which was an aid to the Southern Baptist Convention in 1888. In 1892, she took a much-needed leave of absence in the United States and did so again in 1902.
