Melania Trump’s ‘I Really Don’t Care’ Jacket Was A Message To Ivanka Trump, New Book Claims

Former First Lady Melania Trump had many battles to fight behind the scenes during her husband’s tenure as President of the United States.

According to a new book, Melania and her stepdaughter, Ivanka Trump, fought over her office space because of her decision at the time to stay in New York so her son, Barron, could finish school.

The book’s author, Katie Rogers, a White House correspondent for the New York Times, claimed that Melania’s absence left the post vacant and that Ivanka was eager to fill it.

Following her husband Donald Trump’s victory in 2016, Melania surprised many when she revealed her plans to stay in New York to allow the then 10-year-old Barron to finish his school years.

According to Roger’s new book (via the Daily Mail), Melania’s move reportedly led to Ivanka’s hope to transform office space in the East Wing, which would be “purposed to serve the entire First Family, not just the First Lady.”

Upon learning of her stepson’s plans, Melania stepped in and stopped him, and soon after, Ivanka revealed she would be taking a position as an unpaid adviser in her father’s West Wing.

However, that was only the beginning of Melania’s four-year “internal power struggle” “with her stepdaughter”, whom she nicknamed “Princess”.

According to the news outlet, Rogers’ book revealed that Melania had doubts about Trump’s other children, Eric and Don Jr. The Slovenian-born former model “doesn’t think it’s appropriate for Trump’s children to be involved in White House operations.”

Unfortunately, this was another battle he lost as Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, ended up serving as advisers in the West Wing. Eric and Don Jr. also served as a key surrogate for their father during his 2016 campaign trail and provided advice to the Trump team.

Melania allegedly continued to share her feelings through her clothes, especially her controversial jacket that had the bold question, “I don’t care. Are you?” written on it.

Melania wore the jacket in June 2018 when she boarded an Air Force One plane to visit the Upbring New Hope Children’s Shelter in McAllen, Texas, which houses immigrant children who have been separated from their parents while crossing the border.

Melania, who immigrated to the US and gained citizenship in 2006, was instrumental in pressuring Trump to sign an executive order ending the administration’s practice of separating families at the border.

Rogers notes in his book, “For the most part, the fat Donald was intimidated into action because Melania was adamant that taking children away from their parents was wrong.”

Rogers, in his book, claims Stephanie Grisham, Melania’s top aide, revealed that after they returned from their trip to the Upbring New Hope Children’s Shelter, Trump pulled them both into the Oval Office, where he “yelled at them, and then decided that the official explanation for the jacket was that Melania was speaking directly to the media.”

Melania followed Trump’s plan and told ABC News in an interview that the message on the jacket was “for the public and for the left-wing media that criticizes me.”

“I want to show them that I don’t care. You can criticize whatever you want to say, but it won’t stop me from doing what I think is right,” he claimed at the time.

“Obviously I don’t wear jackets for children,” said Melania. “I wore the jacket to get on the plane and get off the plane. After the tour, I wore it again because I saw how [the] the media became obsessed with it.”

However, another Trump administration official claimed that the message was directed at “Trump — specifically, the president’s eldest daughter, Ivanka.”

Roger’s book notes that Melania and Ivanka, during their years in the White House, “were locked in a quiet competition for press coverage.”

The mother of one also wanted to express her displeasure with Trump’s children being involved in the affairs of the White House.

Since Trump left the Oval Office, Melania and Ivanka are now looking good. The former first daughter expressed her condolences to Melania following the news of her mother’s death, Amalija Knavs. He was also present for Knavs funeral.
