The bill for government care and housing could total up to $451 billion a year nationwide for detained immigrants known as “tourists” who have entered the US since 2021, according to figures cited by a House panel from the Center for Immigration Studies.
Between 16.8 million and 29 million illegal immigrants currently reside in the US, according to committee estimates citing the conservative Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and Yale University, 3.8 million of whom have entered since President Biden took office in January 2021.

Mayorkas revealed during a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing last month that more than 600,000 immigrants entered the country in fiscal year 2023 without being apprehended by border agents.
That’s in addition to another 900,000 who entered the US legally and applied for asylum before being released, according to US Customs and Border Protection data.

The Republican committee member added that FAIR also found in a comprehensive study this year that the federal, state and local costs of illegal immigration total about $182 billion annually — with foreigners paying just $31 billion of that cost in tax revenue.
According to the FAIR report, state governments paid $115 billion of that amount, while the federal government only got $66 billion.
By comparison, the group found in a 2017 study that the top cost of illegal immigration to the US was $135 billion.

The Biden administration has barred immigrants from most federal health programs, while states like California or Illinois and cities like New York have seen their benefit programs expanded to the highest levels.

“Immigrants often need three times the amount of human resources to resolve their cases and provide them with a safe discharge,” Dr. Robert Trenschel, chief executive officer of Yuma Regional Medical Hospital in Arizona, told the committee in February.
“Some migrants come to us with mild illnesses but many of them come with significant illnesses. We have immigrant patients undergoing dialysis, cardiac catheterization and needing heart surgery. Many are very sick. They have long-term complications of untreated chronic diseases.”
Yuma County Supervisor Jonathan Lines also told the committee in September that the influx has forced US citizens to travel far from their homes to receive medical care.

“We have seen women approaching the border during childbirth, I have witnessed it several times, to the point where our emergency room and our maternity ward have been raided,” he said.
“I’ve had several people tell me they had to go to San Diego or to Phoenix to deliver their baby or have a routine surgery that was scheduled that was postponed.”
The cost of education for at least 3.8 million illegal immigrants with limited English proficiency totals $59 billion, according to FAIR.

Other data from the National Institute of Corrections and the Department of Justice show state police spending on illegal immigration-related matters has jumped from $10.5 billion in 2017 to $19 billion now.
Monday’s report also put the economic cost of the opioid crisis at $1.5 trillion in 2020, according to Congress’ Joint Economic Committee, a number driven largely by fentanyl imported from Mexican cartels.
“From thousands of dollars in property damage caused by illegal aliens fleeing from fear and millions of dollars for education, to billions of dollars for health care and luxury housing for aliens, the refusal of Biden and Mayorkas to enforce the law our country’s laws are on the rise—and the American taxpayer is the one involved,” Green said.
“It is long past time for this administration to end the reckless and lawless open border policy that is bankrupting communities across this country.”
