‘Miracle’ IDF soldier recalls being shot by Hamas 12 times, then playing dead among fallen comrades

An Israeli soldier miraculously lived to tell how he was shot 12 times by Hamas on October 7 and lay motionless among his dead comrades “waiting for the last bullet.”

Israel Defense Forces Lt. Eden Ram Pertama — who is up and walking again — described in an emotional online post how he was stationed at Urim South District Base with 12 other soldiers when they were ambushed by terrorists, with gunmen shooting Ram in the leg as soon as he reached the The base’s Operations Room.

Trapped in the room, the wounded soldier and six other soldiers could do nothing but wait until Hamas broke through every security door until they finally reached the IDF soldiers, opening fire on them, he said.

“All this time, I wasn’t sure if I was dead or alive,” Ram wrote on October7.org about the moment the 12 bullets hit his body.

“I feel dead, but I can still see and hear and feel. I waited for the last bullet to hit and kill me, but it never came,” he said.

Despite resigning himself to death – with Ram even texting his loved ones goodbye before Hamas stormed the door – he found himself alive even after being hit by bullets and playing dead for four hours as terrorists examined the bodies.

He said that as he lay in a pool of his own blood surrounded by dead friends and colleagues, he felt the breath of his friend, Sahar, who also survived the attack.

Once the beach was clear, Sahar immediately helped treat Ram, who had gunshot wounds to his leg, left arm and shoulder.

“I was in so much pain I couldn’t say anything – an angel came to save me,” Ram said as more soldiers and first responders arrived at the base.

“They took me to Soroka hospital [in Beer Sheba]and on the way, I immediately asked to call my family and tell them that I was alive against all odds!”

The first 48 hours in hospital were grueling as he received two life-saving surgeries, with doctors keeping him ventilated for the next three days while keeping him sedated.

Despite the damage to his body, Ram said, he should be able to regain full function of his limbs.

Ram has accelerated his recovery, and last week, he received an award from Israeli President Isaac Herzog for his bravery on October 7.

During the ceremony, he said that he was very happy to be back on his feet, describing his recovery as a miracle.

“Difficult moments will accompany me forever,” he said. “I had hard thoughts about whether I was still alive and if I could survive, but then a miracle called me.”
