He is the only male in his family and the youngest of 7 children. He was born on July 22, 1932 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He was born to a Dominican mother of distant Portuguese descent, Carmen Maria Antonia Fiallo, and a Puerto Rican father.
His father is the owner of an insurance firm. He was raised Catholic in a loving family. He experienced great trauma when his mother died of multiple sclerosis. At that time, he was 18 years old.
De la Renta went to study painting in Spain at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid at the age of 18. She drew clothes for fashion houses and newspapers to earn extra money. When Francesca Lodge saw some of her dress sketches, she commissioned Oscar to design a dress for her daughter.
Her designs appeared on the cover of Life magazine that fall. Moreover, Oscar de la Renta quickly became ready in the world of fashion design. He began sketching for leading Spanish fashion houses. After some time, he led an apprenticeship with Spain’s most famous couturier, Cristobal Balenciaga.

He launched his fragrance titled OSCAR followed by lines of accessories and homewares respectively in 2001 and 2002. In 2004, Oscar de la Renta added a clothing line with less expensive features called O Oscar.
