In her latest Instagram post, the former supermodel got candid with her thoughts on grief and the difference between sympathy and empathy.

The former Estée Lauder model was married to Car singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer Ric Ocasek from 1989 until his death in September 2019 while they were still in the process of their divorce. A medical examiner concluded that he had died of natural causes from a hypertensive heart and coronary heart disease at the age of 75.

In an Instagram post Monday, Paulina wrote, “Before I knew what grief was, when I was faced with grief or sorrow, I would retreat with sympathy. I am confused by compassion. But what I actually do- is withdraw from the grieving person, saying ‘oh, poor YOU.’”

“I subconsciously made a shield out of pity for them. I offer harsh words and ‘corrections’. I don’t understand how shallow this is, how little I’m helping,” he wrote. “When I plunged into my own world of grief, I learned firsthand how little I had to offer.”

“Sympathy is not empathy. Grieving people don’t need your sympathy,” he explained. “Grief requires empathy. What is empathy? Empathy is present and witnessing. That all. Hold the grieving person’s hand, and let them do or say what they need to say. We are all good at some things and not so great at others.”

“If your friend is sad, do what you are good at. If you are action oriented, don’t tell them how to solve their grief. Bring food. Clean their house. Look after their children,” he continued. “If you’re parenting, don’t offer harsh words. Hold their hand and cry with them. Do it, and then go replenish your own reserves. Getting lost in the maze of someone else’s grief does you both no good.”

“Do what you can, and trust that others will do the same. But remember that to ‘pity’ someone is to step away from it,” he added.

“Membership in the Grief club is as undesirable as it is inevitable. By being a member, you suffer,” he concluded. “But your suffering can ultimately expand your world, and make your corner of the world better, better.”

Fortunately, even though he also faces sadness, there are happy moments for his family, as he recently revealed just days before his son got engaged.

“In the picture, Jonathan is wearing his father’s ring, the ring he wore throughout our marriage.

It was a bittersweet moment for me,” he added. “His hands, very similar to his father’s,

gently layered by Erin: her tenderness, her care, her love.”

“Dare to love is the bravest act a person can do. Every person you open your heart to will expand your life in unexpected ways. Every time you dare to love is taking the road less traveled,” he continued. “Jonathan and Erin have choosing their path, bringing us together, making us accomplices and witnesses along the way, expanding our world with love, for love, because of love.”
