Prince Harry To Receive High Honor At Annual Living Legends of Aviation Awards

After two tours of military duty and extensive humanitarian work as a veteran, Duke of Sussex Prince Harry will receive the honor at the 21st Annual Living Legends Aviation Awards. Harry previously spoke about how his time in the army turned the pain of his mother, Princess Diana’s death, “into a purpose.”

The prince spoke about being able to focus on a bigger cause and feel normal without the pass he usually gets for being a Royal. The honor comes amid further jibes at him and his wife, Meghan Markle, during the recent Golden Globe Awards, the latest of jokes aimed at the royal couple.

At the upcoming 21st Annual Living Legends Aviation Awards, Prince Harry will be honored for his many years as a pilot and veteran of the British Army. The event will be held in Beverly Hills on January 19 and will be hosted by John Travolta.

Harry’s military record includes two tours of duty as a forward air guard and an Apache helicopter pilot in Afghanistan. The award body also recognized his work in the Invictus Games Foundation. However, it is not yet clear whether Harry or his wife, Meghan Markle, will attend the event and receive the honor in person.

According to the website, the awards celebrate “extraordinary people with extraordinary achievements in aviation,” and each year, they meet to induct and honor new leaders in the industry. Other inductees for 2024 include Steve Hinton, Fred George and Marc Parent, and several honorees include Kyle Clark, Mark Burns and Lauren Sánchez.

They Also Recognize Duke’s Non-Military Work

According to the website, the Aviation Legends body recognizes Harry’s extensive efforts outside of his military work. This includes being a “humanitarian, mental health and environmentalist” with credits for her work with African Parks, Travalyst, WellChild and The Archewell Foundation.

The body also praised Harry for his “compassion, vulnerability and unflinching honesty” in his controversial memoir “Spare.” Harry’s time in the army spanned a decade, and by his discharge, he had reached the rank of Captain. He served as an Apache Helicopter pilot for four months during his second tour in Afghanistan, between September 2012 and January 2013.

The Duke has previously said his time in the army inspired him to create the Invictus Games. The Games are an opportunity to help ex-servicemen by providing competitions for them like the Paralympics. Many military men welcomed the event, and it received great acclaim.

Prince Harry Says Army ‘Saved’ Him

Harry previously spoke of how his time in the army “saved” his life after the loss of his mother, Princess Diana, by helping him turn “pain into purpose.” During a 2023 interview on “60 Minutes,” Duke said being a soldier was his “calling” in life.

He said, per Daily Mail, “My military career saved me in many ways. It kept me out of the UK press. I was able to focus on a cause bigger than myself – to wear the same uniform as everyone else, to feel normal for the first time in my life, and to achieve some of the biggest challenges I’ve ever faced.”

Harry explained to host Anderson Cooper at the time that in the military, there was no “pass to be a prince,” and he had to put in as much work and time as anyone else. He jokingly added, “There’s no prince autopilot button you can push and just squint – take you away.”

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Mocked Again

The announcement of Harry’s upcoming honor and induction comes amid further Hollywood mockery of him and Meghan. On Sunday night, during the Golden Globe awards ceremony, host Jo Koy used the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as a joke.

He said Harry and Meghan were paid “millions of dollars for doing nothing – and that’s just by Netflix,” which drew a lot of laughs, even from Netflix chief executive Ted Sarandos. Koy went on to say that Imelda Staunton’s portrayal of the late Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown” was “so good that Prince Harry called her and asked for money.”

The joke that killed the couple during the Golden Globes is just the latest over the past year. In early 2023, an episode of South Park titled “The Worldwide Privacy Tour” referenced Harry and Meghan on a publicity tour of several countries to promote Duke’s book “Waaagh.” Then the couple was mocked again in an episode of “Family Guy.”
