R. Kelly claims he cannot read or understand any words, especially in his legal case, beyond the words “elementary school child.”
According to court documents obtained by The Blast, the convicted R&B singer denies all accountability in the multi-million dollar lawsuit filed against her, claiming she never knew about her issues with Donnell Russell and should not be held responsible for their downfall.
As we reported, the drama began in August 2023, when the woman won $10.5 million after accusing Russell and Kelly of trying to stop the screening of the Lifetime documentary “Surviving R. Kelly” in New York City 2018 with the threat of a mass shooting.
R. Kelly Says He Can’t Read Or Understand Words More Than A Teenager
In the filing, the singer insisted that even if he got the legal documents in prison, he wouldn’t be able to understand them. “I will not be able to understand the lawsuit or distinguish it from the many other legal documents I receive. It all looks the same to me,” he said.
Adding, “I rely on my lawyer to explain things to me because I can’t read or understand words beyond the words of an elementary school student.”
Kelly’s affidavit captures a lengthy rebuttal of the allegations leveled against him by six women. He said the lawsuit had escaped his notice, since he was incarcerated at Butner FCI, North Carolina.
The “I Believe I Can Fly” hitmaker claims he found out about the $10.5 million judgment awarded to this woman through a friend. He does not recall ever receiving a lawsuit despite receiving various legal papers through his attorney.

Playing the part of the victim, the convicted singer tried to gain sympathy by admitting he was “emotionally broken and placed on suicide watch” since his 2021 conviction. He also stated that he has several other pending criminal cases in different state courts and has been sued so many times by different people that it is impossible to follow.
“In these very confusing and chaotic times, I don’t recall ever receiving a lawsuit in this case. I do not intentionally ignore any lawsuits. I have been transferred to MCC Chicago in early July 2022 to face trial in the Northern District of Illinois,” Kelly explained, before adding:
“I have never received any documents related to this Don Russell lawsuit in Chicago. I don’t know if anyone is trying to send me mail related to this lawsuit, but it’s normal that my mail doesn’t reach me. If I get notice of this lawsuit, I will defend it.”
The media personality emphasized that he had nothing to do with Russell in 2018, claiming the latter had his own company and did not work for him in any capacity. Regarding the alleged shooting threat, Kelly denied his involvement, writing:
“I didn’t know that Don Russell was trying to stop the Lifetime show in New York. I didn’t ask him to do that. I had no prior knowledge that he would call in some kind of threat. If he’s making threats to stop showings in New York, he’s doing it for his own reasons.”
Will throwing his former manager under the bus help the case against him go away? Only time will tell.
R. Kelly Sues Prison Officials For Alleged Leaking His Information

Kelly’s newly obtained court documents are dated November 2, 2023, the same month he filed suit against prison officials for allegedly leaking his information to a blogger. The entertainer involved claims three unnamed officers conspired with Tasha K to expose her activities while she was in Chicago police custody.
In court documents, he claims the leaked information dates back to 2019 and includes his private calls, visitor logs, email correspondence and more. Kelly, who is suing for damages, believes these officials sold his activities to the blogger for money.
He said officials gave Tasha K ammunition to share unflattering details about her online. The result, according to his claim, caused him severe emotional distress, significantly damaged his reputation and was an invasion of his privacy.
The “I’m Your Angel” artist also attacked the US government for negligence, claiming they allowed prison staff to have access to his personal information and share it. Following the suit, Tasha K responded and denied associating with prison officials.
According to the blogger, he was not involved in any illegal activities related to the singer and did not conspire with anyone to release information about him. Kelly’s plea comes months after a Chicago court sentenced her to an additional 20 years in prison.
He was found guilty of molesting a minor and possessing child sexual abuse material. Thanks to this decision, Kelly will spend 31 years in prison.
