Actress Rosario Dawson had to go through intense training for her new “Star Wars” series “Ahsoka.”
While the actress has helped Ahsoka Tano’s character make her live-action debut from “The Clone Wars” and “Rebels” in the Disney+ live-action series “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett,” this will be Ahsoka’s first time in the middle – in the middle of the action.
Since Ahsoka uses two lightsabers to fight, Dawson revealed that she had to be ambidextrous to pull off her character’s signature style.

In a May 2023 interview with Entertainment Weekly on their Dagobah Dispatch podcast, Rosario Dawson revealed that her training was “pretty intense” and consisted of practicing Ahsoka’s lightsaber form for two hours a day, seven days a week. “And then you add when we’re actually filming and doing these different battles and having to keep studying them,” he added.
Dawson notes that Ahsoka is ambidextrous when she fights, which she says is “only a lot to have.” He also noted that Ahsoka was “very fierce from the start,” adding, “It was never a question of whether she was capable. She met every match head-on. There wasn’t an iota of doubt from her, and that’s really different from someone who learned martial arts in their 40s trying to protect their face.”

He went on to admit that it actually took months of practice before something “clicked” for him. “There was definitely a time a few months after training where I just felt it land in my body in a way. I remember when it clicked where I really felt rooted to her and some things started to feel more familiar and seamless,” she said. “That’s when I really felt like I was locked in with Ahsoka.”
He also received help from stunt coordinator Ming Qiu and others on set. “I’m thankful for the team of people we have,” Dawson said. “And to have someone like Ming, who actually started nodding and saying, ‘Okay, this can work.’ When he said, ‘This doesn’t make my eyes hurt,’ that was the first compliment I got, and I think I cried. We put a lot of effort into making it look simple, and that feels so incredible because of that discerning eye.”

In addition to practicing his lightsaber training, Dawson also had to learn how to do Jedi mind tricks and learn how to make his Force abilities look realistic on screen. “It’s the intention and the desire behind it,” he explained. “I think I have it more than someone who just wants to move objects.”
“I definitely feel more empowered and confident portraying this character, and I think it comes through,” she added. “Even though I’m meditating, I feel like there’s an energy that we have and a power that we have that if we concentrate and focus it in the right way can move mountains.”
Natasha Liu Bordizzo Also Had To Go Through Intense Lightsaber Training For Her Role As Sabine Wren

Many familiar faces from “Star Wars: Rebels” will make an appearance in “Ahsoka,” including Sabine Wren. Actress Natasha Liu Bordizzo also recently revealed about the lightsaber training she received for Empire magazine’s summer 2023 “Star Wars” issue.
“I’m very happy to be out there. It’s hard to talk about my fight training without talking about the fact that it’s sword training, which is literally all I’ve been doing all this time,” he explained (via Collider). “The Mandalorians [physicality] is very Western, and then ‘sword styles are heavily influenced by the samurai. Trying to embody those two things – sometimes one after the other – in choreography is very interesting because it’s a different way. I’m really enjoying the journey of trying to master both.”

While many fans wanted to know what lightsaber Sabine used in her fight against Ivanna Sakhno’s character, Shin Hati, Natasha played it coy, asking, “What can I tease?” He went on to say, “It’s just part of the journey. Not just the sword itself, but what comes with it, and what it means, and what mindset it takes to wield that weapon.”
“Ahsoka” will premiere on Disney+ in August 2023.
