Russell Wilson’s Future For Denver Broncos Reportedly In Question

Russell Wilson may need to keep his career prospects open with his longtime team’s latest move to replace him.

The NFL star’s history with the Denver Broncos appears to be nearing its climax after the organization reportedly decided to drop the starting quarterback. They also plan to leave him inactive to avoid paying huge sums of money for each of his contracts.

Russell Wilson Expected To Cut Over $37 Million In Injury Guarantee Per Source

The report of the Denver Broncos’ decision to replace Wilson comes via NFL insider Dianna Russini. The reporter recently delivered some heartbreaking news at X, sharing several tweets about the quarterback’s future with his old team.

According to him, Wilson knew about the Broncos’ plans to cut him, but he continued to give his best on the field for months. “Russell Wilson expects to be cut by the Denver Broncos in March, per league source,” he previously said adding:

“For nearly two months, the quarterback has started to know the organization will most likely move on him after the season.”

In a second tweet, Russini explained multiple sources attributed the Broncos’ decision to trade Wilson to the $37 million injury guarantee clause in his contract. The NFL organization allegedly wants to avoid paying a hefty fee if the quarterback is injured and unable to pass a physical by early March.

The reporter’s message read: “The Broncos contacted Wilson’s representatives in late October and explained that Wilson would lose his starting job and be inactive for the rest of the season if he did not delay the trigger date of his injury guarantee to 2025, per a league source.” He continued in a third tweet, writing:

“Wilson has a $37 million injury guarantee for 2025 that will vest on the fifth day of the 2024 league year in March. Attorneys, including some with the NFLPA, were involved, and no changes were made to the contract.”

Although Wilson was aware he would be left inactive if he did not postpone this injury guarantee, he was reportedly told at the last minute when the change would take effect. “It was made clear that the Broncos never told Wilson if or when they would be replacing him this season, he was just playing until he was told this morning he was no longer playing,” Russini revealed.

The sudden loss of his starting role should leave a bitter taste in Wilson’s mouth; however, the NFL star handled the situation with class. Following the news, the 11-time NFC Offensive Player of the Week updated his X page with reply, “God is mine. Stay tuned for what’s next.”

Fans React To Denver Broncos’ Decision To Bench Russell Wilson

Although Wilson responded to the heartbreaking news with grace, her fans were not happy. Many called out the Denver Broncos for making a huge mistake, while others praised the quarterback and claimed he deserved better than the team.

“How many players in the league are going to handle this with the same class as Russ? How bad things have been for him in the background all year. I’m open to conversations about moving on from him this offseason, but he deserves better than this,” a frustrated user X said written.

Another echoed the same sentiment, write, “Coaches are toxic. The offensive line is very weak. Russ was supposed to take a very mediocre team to the Super Bowl. Russ deserves better than this organization. Just because he is a gentleman, people look down on him. Many fans are also poisonous.”

“The Broncos have done you dirty,” a third sigh while others praised Wilson’s response to his bench, tweeting“Friend wrote this by the fireplace on a bearskin rug while sipping orange soda.”

More Wilson supporters continue to bash the Broncos, with one declare, “Glad the NFLPA stepped in. Absolute clown behavior from Broncos org.” Another critic stated that the quarterback’s performance should have been better, penny:

“29 total touchdowns to just eight interceptions deserves better than this. The Broncos are trash for treating him this way.”

Fans’ thoughts on the Broncos may not be clear, with the NFL postseason likely putting the team in a bad spot according to their Next Gen Stats model. The probability model reportedly simulated the remainder of the NFL season 10,000 times to provide a detailed estimate of each team’s playoff chances.

According to Next Gen Stats’ playoff picture, the Broncos are part of the speculation team with a less than 10% probability of making the playoffs. They have an 8% chance, which may or may not be affected by their decision to replace Wilson.
