The SAG-AFTRA union prioritizes the safety and well-being of its members and the public.
The union announced that all pickets scheduled for ‘Friday the 13th’ in New York City and Los Angeles would be canceled in the wake of the Israeli-Palestinian crisis. According to the body, the cancellation had nothing to do with the ongoing writers’ strike, and was merely a necessary safety measure.
Details About New SAG-AFTRA Development
The body opened its social media page on X (formerly Twitter) to update the public on this critical decision. The post, which contained the words, “Picket lines will close at all locations in NY and LA on Friday, October 13,” was accompanied by a more detailed caption that read:
“Due to potential safety concerns unrelated to our ongoing strike, there will be no SAG-AFTRA pickets in New York City or Los Angeles on Friday, Oct. 13. Stay safe and see you on the picket line next week. #SagAftraStrong #SagAftraStrike.”
Although it has not been confirmed what the potential threat is, it is reported that the union made its decision following the announcement of former Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal.
Meshaal has asked his supporters to protest around the world on Friday, October 13, in solidarity with the terrorist attacks launched against Israel. The ongoing crisis, which began with an ambush by Hamas on Israel nearly a week ago, has claimed 2,700 lives on both sides.

The New York Police Department and the Los Angeles Police Department have each released statement citing that there are no known or credible threats at this time. Regardless of their uncertainty, the bodies are committed to monitoring the developing situation and increasing patrols “on high alert.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams continued shared together on its X page that the police department has been ordered to send extra resources to schools and synagogues to keep everyone safe and New York “remains a safe place.” The LAPD also released a statement on its official social media handle, which read:
“The Los Angeles Police Department is aware of recent statements calling for action as they relate to the conflict in the Middle East. We do not have information about any specific or credible threats to the City of Los Angeles but we continue to assess the situation for any potential impact on our community. We are closely monitoring this event and coordinating with Federal, State and local partners regarding information sharing.”
The Academy Museum Gala Has Also Canceled The Event In Respect Of The Ongoing Crisis
Like SAG-AFTRA, the Academy Museum Gala announced the postponement of the red carpet planned for Saturday. The announcement came in the wake of Hamas attacks on Israel, leaving thousands dead.

Per Hollywood Reporterthe body initially announced that only the red carpet segment of the event would be canceled and wrote:
“The Academy Museum condemns all forms of hatred and cruelty and stands in support of the innocent Israeli and Palestinian lives affected by the ongoing violence. In honor of the terrible conflict and loss of life that has taken place overseas, the Academy Museum has decided to cancel the red carpet at its annual fundraising gala on Saturday, October 14.”
The museum then decided to postpone the entire event, according to a statement from a spokesperson, which read, “In respect for the terrible conflict and loss of life that is taking place overseas, we have decided to postpone this Saturday’s Academy Museum gala. We hope to reschedule at a future date. We are very grateful to everyone for their support.”
The Museum Academy Gala is an annual fundraiser for museum exhibits, educational initiatives, and public programming. The four awards presented at this year’s ceremony showcase the museum’s ongoing mission to promote the understanding, celebration and preservation of film.
The award also aims to challenge the dominant narrative around cinema and is presented by Rolex. It was the first major Hollywood event to be postponed following the attack, with celebrities such as Angela Basset, Kerry Washington, Selena Gomez, Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Pedro Pascal, and many more on the guest list.
