Less than two months after she announced her intention to appoint a black woman to fill the remainder of Feinstein’s term, which runs through the November 2024 election, should the seat become vacant, Newsom has gone ahead.
California’s governor has turned his attention to a strategist who is the first black woman to lead Emily’s List — a fundraising organization committed to electing female candidates who support reproductive rights. Announcing the decision in a lengthy speech, the Democrat began:
“I am pleased to announce the new United States Senator for California — Laphonza Butler. As we mourn the great loss of Sen. Feinstein, the freedoms she fights for — reproductive freedom, equal protection and safety from gun violence — have never been under greater attack. Laphonza has spent her entire career fighting for women and girls and has been a fierce advocate for working people.
The former lieutenant governor of California noted her accomplishment as “the first black lesbian to serve openly in the US Senate,” before draw conclusions:
“From her days as President of EMILY’s List to leading the largest labor union in the state, she always stood up for what was right and led with her heart and values. I have no doubt she will pick up the baton left by Senator Feinstein, continue to break the glass ceiling, and fight for all Californians in Washington.

The news, which was shared through X on Sunday night, has unexpectedly resulted in the sparking of different opinions among many. “I am excited about the choice Newsom made. It’s amazing, he made the right choice,” a user X writeas others expressed, “Congratulations to the new Senator, Laphonza Butler! It’s comforting to know that the fight for important freedoms continues, even if Feinstein’s shoes are big ones to fill.”
Third fan pointed out“Newsom kept his promise ??,” and the fourth quoted, “A brilliant choice. He will represent the state admirably and those already running can continue campaigning, with voters deciding in 2024.”
At the same time, others who had problems with Newsom’s selection, especially because of Butler’s residence, voiced their concerns. One person typed“No wonder we all got it wrong, no one thought you would choose someone’s form [sic] Maryland,” and another wondering, “? You can’t find a black woman living in California? You had to pick some radical who lives in Maryland? ✊?.”
“Pretty harsh assessment of California politicians if you have to go across the continent to find someone to represent your state in the Senate,” a third critic sounded. The same goes for the fourth observer specified, “I’m sure he’s eligible, but isn’t anyone eligible actually registered to vote in California? Not the best look idk.” The fifth netizen quipped clapping hands:
“Another diversity hire, just what we need. Because they always work well…”
Regardless of how Newsom’s choice is viewed, there is no doubt that Butler’s strong political career and resume speak for themselves. Per The New York Timesthe 44-year-old has played a key role in California politics for nearly 15 years, previously leading the state’s largest labor union and advising Vice President Kamala Harris.

As for Senator Feinstein, The Blast reports that she died at the age of 90 at her home in Washington, DC last week. The news of his death was revealed by his chief of staff, James Sauls, in a statement which read:
“Sadly, Senator Feinstein passed away last night at her home in Washington, DC. Her passing is a great loss to so many, from those who loved and cared for her to the people of California she dedicated her life to serving. Senator Feinstein has never backed down from the fight for what is just and right.
After mentioning his willingness to “work with anyone, even those who disagree with him, if it means improving the lives of Californians or advancing our nation,” Sauls continued:
“There are some women who can be called senators, chairpersons, mayors, wives, mothers and grandmothers. Senator Feinstein is a force of nature who has made a tremendous impact on our nation and her home state. He left an undeniable and extraordinary legacy.”
Sauls concluded his speech by noting that while there is “a lot to say about who he was and what he did,” his loved ones and staff needed time to “grieving the passing of our beloved boss, mentor and friend.”
