Maddie Brown, daughter of “Sister Wives” stars Kody and Janelle Brown, opens up about her feelings following her brother’s heartbreaking death.
Earlier this month, Garrison Brown, the fourth of six children, died of an apparent suicide in his Flagstaff home. His sister recently spoke about his death in a candid video, sharing why she believes social media is partly to blame for the unfortunate incident.
Janelle Brown’s Daughter Sends Important Message About Mental Health
On Monday, Maddie updated her Instagram page with a long clip about her brother’s death and the importance of mental health. He began by thanking his followers for the outpouring of love and support he received after Garrison’s death.
The 28-year-old admitted that the first week after his younger brother’s death was “terrible.” However, as time passes, he is not depressed to think that he needs to “return to real life”.
Maddie insists that she is ready to “get back to normal” as much as possible, which is why she wants fans to understand the importance of mental health.
While she is thankful for the supportive platform and the way she connects with her audience, it doesn’t overshadow the downsides of social media.
“Mental health is so important, and I don’t think we talk about it enough. And I don’t think we do enough to raise awareness,” Maddie shared before reflecting on how it had affected her late brother. In his words:
“It’s not bullying. It’s not a lack of love that Garrison has; it is mental health. And I’m going to keep talking about mental health and self-care until I’m blue in the face.”
Maddie Says Social Media Influences Garrison
Maddie points out that “social media isn’t real” because most people share highlights of their best moments online.
He states that self-reflection is important if one is not satisfied with their life situation; however, they cannot compare themselves to those on the internet.
Using his late brother as an example, the 28-year-old said, “Garrison used to feel like he wasn’t doing enough because he was comparing himself to things on social media, and I don’t think that’s true, and I think we have to remember that.” He went on to say:
“So if you’re feeling down because you see someone posting something, remember it’s their highlight reel and you’re not seeing you’re not seeing all the things going on in the background.”
In the caption of the post, Maddie explained that she was inspired to share her thoughts on mental health after speaking with a friend who had also been “closely touched by the tragedy of suicide.”
Fans React Positively To Maddie’s Message
Maddie’s emotional message touched the hearts of her followers, who flooded the comments section with their insights into mental health and healing through the loss of a loved one. An IG user shared:
“That’s beautiful, Madison. Mental health IS health. It should be despised and treated with respect. I know so many ‘smart’ people who run away from anyone with a Mental Health challenge.”
“Let’s embrace and join hands with them as we do with anyone who has any kind of physical health problem,” the individual concluded. Another supporter spoke up:
“Grief is not linear and looks different for everyone. Be gentle with yourself [red heart emoji].”
The third relates to Maddie’s struggle to return to normal, writing, “It’s hard to return to normal after death, but suicide is a different kind of loss. Thinking of you & all your family at this difficult time. My heart breaks for you all.”
Garrison Was Buried In A Private Ceremony
Four days after his tragic death on March 5, Garrison was laid to rest in a private ceremony surrounded by the Brown family. His cousin, Emma, confirmed the news in a touching Instagram post alongside different pictures of the deceased.
The image captures Garrison hiking, enjoying a face mask with his cousin, and a cute image of his younger self. Emma captioned a recent photo with a letter detailing her thoughts after the funeral.
“Dear Robert, I had to dress for your funeral today, and this is all I hope you can hear before I say goodbye,” she began, adding:
“We love you. I don’t have a picture of you without your infectious smile. I don’t know if I have the right words to say how much I will miss you. I wish I could hug you and tell you how much you are loved.”
Garrison Is More Than Cousins
In her letter, Emma talks about her friendship with Garrison and emphasizes that he is more than a cousin. The two allegedly planned to go on several backpacking trips but only once.
The grieving brother highlighted some of their precious memories, writing, “I will miss your dad’s silly jokes, our coffees, the dinners we shared. When we watch movies, and you always let me put messy face masks all over our faces.”
In addition, he stated that Garrison always took care of him by making sure he had eaten and was ready to listen to all his problems or stories. Emma ended her message:
“You were a son, a brother, a soldier, and a friend. If there is a God, I hope he gives you peace. I love you, Robert.”
