The 54-year-old actor has a recurring role as Sarek on “Star Trek: Discovery.” In an interview with Variety, James Frain revealed that it was a “challenge” for him to play Vulcan and hide his emotions.

“When I dig into the canon and the background of the characters, the idea of the Vulcans — there’s kind of an origin story,” he explained. “Apparently, they are a very passionate and expressive species, and they had a terrible nuclear war on their planet and they concluded that the war happened because of an out-of-control feeling that needed to be suppressed and managed.”

“They built a culture based on logic so that things like that cannot happen again. So in their prehistory, there was this massive oppression,” he continued. “I think that’s very interesting, how it can be passed down from generation to generation. However, for all Vulcans there is a conflict between something internal that must be denied and a truly strict code of conduct.”

James Frain also said that it’s “tricky” trying to navigate the extremes of being too robotic or too emotional. “Too many are boring. Too many others don’t fit. It’s exciting to play,” he said. “It was very challenging. I never know if I’m doing it right. But that’s always the question in every scene, every beat — am I calibrating this right?”
