“You know, guys, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but we do a lot of shows and I tell a lot of jokes, and I tell jokes about a lot of different things, mostly things that everybody talks about,” Colbert began, per Every day Mail. “And for the past six weeks to two months, everyone has been talking about the mysterious disappearance of Kate Middleton from public life.”

The comedian later stated that, like many others, he made jokes about his “loss” and realized that they “disturbed some people.”

In his monologue, Colbert discussed Kate’s “prognosis,” noting that as a future queen, she will have access to the best care in the world and will likely come out of this experience stronger.

Colbert said, “Right now, I don’t know if the prognosis is tragic; she is the future Queen of England, and I assume she will have the best medical care. But no matter what it is, I know, and I’m sure many of you, too many of us, know that any type of cancer diagnosis is distressing for patients and their families.”

Concluding his monologue, Colbert wished the princess a speedy recovery, saying: “And, while I’m sure they don’t need it from me, I and everyone here at ‘The Late Show’ want to send our best wishes. may he recover quickly and get well.”

Colbert has now come under fire for speaking out on the issue without giving the princess a direct apology for his joke made at her and her husband, Prince William’s expense.

Speaking about the ineptitude, former press secretary to the late Queen Elizabeth II, Dickie Arbiter said: “She may be full of self-pity but she’s not apologizing.”

Arbiter continued on X (formerly Twitter): “American chat show hosts have a cruel capacity for making jokes at the expense of others and Colbert is no exception. Buckingham Palace says he’s had surgery, and will be out for a few weeks. The Princess of Wales isn’t gone, she’s recovered.”

“This is not good enough for chat show hosts or Twitterati – SHAME on you all. There is a clear message – engage the brain before the mouth if the former exists,” said the former press secretary.

Other social media users also commented on Colbert’s monologue, with one writing, “He’s an idiot. That’s not an apology. I am very ashamed of my country’s media. [It’s] has been out of control for [years].”

Another said: “Many mainstream journalists, including ITV’s Chris Ship, jumped on board [the] bully bandwagon. Cruelty is not limited to US TV hosts and social media.”

Kate, in a short video, shocked the world when she announced last Friday that she had been diagnosed with cancer.

The Princess of Wales revealed that the cancer diagnosis came after she underwent successful abdominal surgery in January for a condition she was told was non-cancerous. Unfortunately for the mother of three, after further tests, her doctor found cancer in her system.

Because of the bad news, her medical team advised her to start “preventive chemotherapy.” He is currently in the early stages of treatment.

In the video, Kate stated, “We hope you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy, and I look forward to returning when I can, but for now, I must focus on a full recovery.”
