During her recent stop in Melbourne on her Eras Tour, Swift got candid about her state of mind when she created her critically acclaimed album, “Folklore.” Reflecting on her creative process during quarantine with her ex, Alwyn, the 34-year-old pop star expressed feelings of “loneliness”.
Standing on stage holding a guitar in front of a microphone, Swift painted a vivid picture for the audience, stating: “[I was] imagining that, instead of being a lonely millennial woman covered in cat fur drinking my weight in white wine, I was a ghostly Victorian woman wandering through the woods with a candle in a candle holder.

She added, “And I just wrote on paper with a feather. And that was in my mind, what I thought I looked like…while writing Folklore. As she began strumming her guitar, Swift reminded the crowd that sometimes, it’s “Imagination is important.”
How COVID-19 Quarantine Inspired Singers To Collaborate With Joe Alwyn

Swift’s “Folklore” was released in July 2020 and went on to win a Grammy for Best Album in 2021. Interestingly, her ex, Alwyn, contributed as a producer under the alias William Bowery, notably co-writing songs like “Betty” and “Isolation.”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2020, the “Out of the Woods” filmmaker reflected on his quarantine experience and admitted to accidentally delving into filmmaking during that period.
“I didn’t expect to make an album,” he shared. “At the beginning of the quarantine, I started watching a lot of movies. We will watch a different movie every night.”
Swift continued: “I’m ashamed to say I’ve never seen Pan’s Labyrinth before. One night, I’ll watch that, then I’ll watch LA Confidential, then we’ll watch Rear Window, then we’ll watch Jane Eyre.”
The singer noted that “taking other people’s art and storytelling opened up these portals in my imagination and made me feel like, ‘Well, why haven’t I done this before?'”
Swift also added that she was drawn to creating characters and “intersecting storylines.”

During her appearance on “The Zane Lowe Show” for Apple Music, Swift also shared insight into her collaboration with Alwyn while they were in quarantine in London.
He explained how the “Harriet” actor’s ongoing musical experimentation sparked the idea to collaborate on songwriting.
“He always plays an instrument, and he doesn’t do it in a strategic ‘I’m writing a song right now’ thing,” he said.
The “New Romantics” hitmaker emphasized that their collaboration came from a natural, spontaneous process, adding: “He’s always done that. But do I think we’re going to take the step of, ‘Hey, let’s see if there’s a song here? Let’s we create songs together.’ If we hadn’t locked down, I don’t think it would have happened, but I’m so glad it did.”
Describing their love of melancholic music, Swift added: “Me and Joe really like sad songs. We are always attached to music…We write the saddest. We just love sad songs. What can I say?”
Last April, reports confirmed the end of Swift and Alwyn’s six-year relationship.

At this year’s Grammy Awards, Swift won the awards for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Album for “Midnights.”
During her acceptance speech for Best Pop Vocal Album, the “Shake It Off” singer surprised fans with the announcement of her next project, titled “The Tortured Poets Department.”
Following the announcement, there was speculation that the album’s title might be a reference to Alwyn, especially given that he previously mentioned a WhatsApp group called The Tortured Man Club in 2022.
Sources close to Alwyn shared their concerns about the upcoming music project with Daily Mail, hinting the actor would feel “shady” if Swift criticized him and talked about their relationship.
