Teens accused of killing retired police chief laugh, flip off victim’s family in court

Two Las Vegas teenagers accused of hitting a retired police chief laughed with each other, smiled, and appeared to have their backs on their victim’s family during a court hearing earlier this week.

Jesus Ayala, 18, and Jzamir Keys, 16, were back in court Tuesday more than two months after they allegedly filmed themselves intentionally plowing into Andreas Probst, a 64-year-old retired police chief, who was out for a morning bike ride.

The teenagers’ antics began when they sat down for the hearing in Clark County court, covering the right side of their faces to hide from the cameras before appearing to cover their mouths to stifle their laughter.

The teenagers, who were both minors when Probst was killed, are charged with murder and are being tried as adults.

Probst’s family slammed the teenager’s horrific actions, saying they have “absolutely no remorse.”

“How can you sit there after taking a man’s life, and act like a p—k?” Taylor Probst, Andreas’ 27-year-old daughter, told reporters outside court. “They really have no regrets, that this is just a game to them.”

Ayala’s public defender, David Westbrook, was also seen laughing with the teenager in the courtroom on Tuesday, video from KTNV showed.

Westbrook expressed his frustration with the release of the body camera footage, saying he should have been able to see it in front of the media, which obtained the video through a public records request.

The public defender also said she was worried about finding a fair jury for the case because of the viral media attention, which angered Probst’s widow.

“Your people who put it on the media first, your customers are the ones who put it on social media,” said Crystal Probst, referring to the in-car view of August’s gruesome murder.

“They were just trying to freak us out and scare us, which didn’t work,” added Taylor Probst.

Crystal Probst, who was wearing her late husband’s damaged Apple Watch, remained unfazed by the deadly couple’s intimidation tactics.

“It just makes him look bad,” he told the Las Vegas Review-Journal, saying Ayala pointed his middle finger at him.

During his initial arrest on August 14, Ayala told police he would be released from prison in a month.

“You think this teenager [expletive] will do some [expletive]? I’ll be out in 30 days, I’ll bet you,” Ayala told officials after he was arrested in September.

In body camera footage released Monday, the 18-year-old asked the officer if the accident was “really serious.”

“Is it really serious, like it is, because I supposedly hit a car?” Ayala asked the officer who transported him following his arrest.

“You think I’m going out for the news?” Ayala then asked the officer.

“It won’t be good, it won’t make your mama proud,” replied the officer.

Ayala’s mother has made headlines herself, saying she doesn’t understand why her son did what he did.

“I don’t know why he did this,” Ayala said. “I don’t know if God can forgive this.”

Taylor Probst blames the Ayala family and Keys as the main people who let the teenager down.

“A lot of different people fail, but I think ultimately parents are on all ends. They are the ones who failed.”
