A 7-year-old girl in Tennessee was killed by her own birthday balloons earlier this month and now her devastated mother is warning other parents about the potential dangers associated with the usually happy holiday decorations.

Little Alexandra Hope Kelly was inflating her balloons at her Clinton home on Oct. 1 when she choked on a large “7” balloon her family had bought for her birthday party days earlier, her mother Channa Kelly said in a Facebook post Sunday. .

“That’s what took my baby, it was his birthday balloon,” Kelly told WAFB. “Difficult to understand.”

Daughter Kelly turned 7 on September 27. The woman was sitting with Alexandra as she took out all her latex balloons — knowing they were a choking hazard — a week after her birthday party. Alexandra then asked if she could pop the 34 inch foil “7” balloon as well.

The mother told her daughter yes and went into her bedroom “not realizing any danger with this type of balloon” and fell asleep for a moment, she said.

When she awoke, she found her only child face down on the living room floor with a burst balloon around her head, Kelly recounted in the tragic post.

He said he removed the balloon, called 911 and immediately began CPR. Emergency personnel took over CPR when an ambulance arrived, but the little girl could not be saved, Kelly said.

“They worked tirelessly to try to bring him back but their attempts to recover him were unsuccessful,” he said. “I cried hysterically and was shocked and couldn’t believe what had just happened, that my daughter and only child was actually gone.”

It is unclear whether Alexandra died of suffocation or helium poisoning. A medical examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and police are investigating his death, according to the grieving mother.

Kelly said she is sharing her story to raise awareness about the dangers of mylar balloons.

“On Sunday, October 1st my whole world came crashing down around me because I was unaware of the risks surrounding this type of balloon… I hope and pray that [sharing our story] will prevent and save the lives of other children,” he said. “I don’t want anyone else to experience the pain and devastation that losing a child brings.”

Balloons are the number one cause of child suffocation death of all children’s products, according to data from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

A funeral for Alexandra was held over the weekend. Her mother said she loved arts and crafts, spending time with her cousins ​​and swimming in her grandparents’ pool.

“She was full of curiosity and had to ask questions about everything… She was an excellent conversationalist and amazed me with her ability to understand and express herself,” Kelly said. “She put a smile on everyone’s face and brought so much joy and laughter to my life.”
