While others said, “When your soul is pure, and your heart is so giving … your beauty shines differently ?✨️?✨️.”

In 2019, Disney announced that actress Halle Bailey, best known for her work on ABC’s “Grown-ish” and as one half of the popular R&B singing duo Chloe and Halle, will portray the iconic Disney Princess, Ariel, in the live-action remake “The Little Mermaid.”

Shortly after the announcement, fans took to social media to express their dismay over the Disney Princess cast and the hashtag #NotMyAriel instantly started trending.

However, some are backing Bailey, including The Walt Disney Company, Jodi Benson (the original voice for Ariel in the 1989 animated classic), and Lin-Manuel Miranda, one of the producers and composers for the upcoming live-action remake.

Bailey also addressed the backlash, saying, “And to this day with all the comments and people’s opinions, it just reminds me to be number one: grounded, and grateful that I have this opportunity.”

She continued, “And the fact that it sparked such a discussion for all of us … I mean, I know what it meant to me as a little girl to be able to see Black Ariel.

“When I was younger, if I saw it, it would change my whole outlook on life so the fact that I kind of did that was really amazing and unbelievable to me and the little girl in me. was screaming and scared,” Bailey concluded.

The upcoming live-action film will star Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder.

Walt Disney Studios describes the film as:

“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most rebellious, Ariel wants to learn more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls in love with the dashing Prince Eric. Disney’s live action “The Little Mermaid” hits theaters on May 26, 2022.
