Trevor Noah speaks out against Elon Musk’s plan to commercialize Twitter verification. After buying the social media platform in late October, the tech’s CEO has launched a plan to ensure everyone is verified for a fee.
Initially, Musk wanted to charge users $20 a month to get or keep the prestigious blue mark, but he later paid an $8 fee, explaining his decision to make everyone equal and eliminate the “master and peasant” system.
However, not everyone is satisfied with the development, especially Noah.

Earlier this week, “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” released the second of four live tapings in Atlanta, Georgia, where Noah switched his hosting style to a stand-up comedy routine. During his 10-minute monologue, the comedian discussed Musk’s plans but not without dropping major hints.

Noah began by calling Tesla’s CEO “the guy who always looks like a ghost, whether it’s Halloween or not” before touching on the subject. “For months now, Musk has said that he wants to own Twitter. And the reason he wants to own Twitter is because he wants to make sure that it’s a haven for free speech,” he said.
The South African native joked about how Twitter hasn’t always been a place where people are afraid to speak their minds, saying, “because honestly, until now, you know, people have really held back on Twitter. I always find myself scrolling and thinking, what are you really thinking? Why are you so reserved, sir?”
The author of “Born A Crime” later referenced reports that N-word usage increased nearly 500% in Musk’s first 12 hours as owner of the social media platform. Always looking for a funny point of view, he joked, “You don’t know! Who knows what it is? It can be racist, yes. Maybe….[People] feel free and feel brave to say it now. Or maybe black people watching Elon take over were like, ‘This is ****.”
Noah addressed the subject of Musk trying to promote free speech with his ownership, saying, “He’s going crazy. Here’s my question. I really want to know this. Why is it that often when people who have free speech—everyone like that, we want free speech!—why they never want to use their freedom of speech to say words like ‘perambulate’ or ‘pusillanimous.’ Like, it was never that kind of thing, did you notice? They were like, ‘We want free speech! We want free speech!’ OK, what do you want to say? ‘N****.’”

The comedian then discussed Elon’s plans to monetize Twitter, saying the Space X founder was “scrambled” to find a way to monetize his controversial $44 billion purchase. He stated that since Twitter is not a profitable company, the entrepreneur came up with a new model to charge people for verification.
“Because I think he’s hoping that other people on Twitter will make bad financial decisions like he did,” Noah scoffed. He then scoffed at the idea of spending $8, saying there are better ventures people could use. He directly addressed Musk’s reasoning for the new implementation.
“So here’s my question: If you’re trying to create equality on Twitter, why charge anyone to be verified? Give everyone a blue checkmark, then. Why do you accuse people?” Noah wondered.
The Primetime Emmy Award winner continued, “It doesn’t make sense to offer it as ‘equality’ and then put a price on it, you know what I’m saying? Can you imagine if MLK was out there like, ‘I have a dream. I have a dream…and I’m going to tell you all about it for $8.99 a month.’ It will never be the same.”
Concluding his discussion on the topic, Noah accused Musk of trying to hide his desire to make money behind noble causes like equality. He then offered advice to the billionaire, saying, “I think this $8 a month thing is ridiculous. If you ask me, if Elon Musk wants to make money from Twitter, what should he do [is], don’t charge people for blue ticks. Demand white people say the N word. Twitter will be the most profitable company in history. Racists will make loans.”
The Los Angeles Lakers player wrote, “I don’t know Elon Musk and, tbh, I don’t care who owns Twitter. But I will say that if this is true, I hope he and his people take this seriously because this is scary AF. So many unworthy people saying hate speech is free speech..”
