Wendy Williams’ Family Slams Her Court-Appointed Guardianship: ‘The System Is Broken!’

The family of former talk show host Wendy Williams has voiced their displeasure with the 59-year-old’s court-appointed guardianship.

Williams has been under guardianship since 2022 after leaving her role as host of her eponymous show. He now resides in an undisclosed facility that treats cognitive impairment after he suffered a breakdown last year.

It has been nearly two years since Williams was placed under the care of a court-appointed legal guardian, as he was deemed vulnerable to financial exploitation due to his various cognitive and health problems.

The former “Wendy Williams Show” host’s family is now speaking out against the care, saying the system that has largely restricted their access to her and only worsened her well-being is “broken”.

“How did she go from the aunt or sister that we love and are healthy for a minute to this person who is in and out of the hospital?” Williams’ sister, Wanda Finnie, asked in an interview with People magazine.

He added, “How is that system better than a system that families can implement? I don’t know. I know that this system is broken. I hope that at some point, Wendy becomes strong enough where she can speak for herself.”

The Williams family’s concerns were shared by executive producer Mark Ford, who helmed the TV personality’s documentary “Where Is Wendy Williams?”

“Just because you’re under care doesn’t mean you’re getting 24/7 care,” Ford said. “When we got to know Wendy’s family, it was clear to us that this was a good family, and the question remained in our minds: Why couldn’t that family be a part of Wendy’s life? Why can’t the family serve as his guardian? I still don’t have the full answer.”

Ford also revealed that several attempts by his crew to contact Williams’ guardians had proved futile, leaving them unable to ask convincing questions about their star character’s well-being.

He added, “So we couldn’t really ask the questions we like to ask, like, ‘What goes on here every day? And why is there no food in Wendy’s apartment, for example?’ Simple things we can see just because we go there often.”

Will Wendy Williams Be Free From Her Care?

The documentary, which will be screened in two parts later this month, is believed to hint that Williams wants to break free from his care. However, the odds look bleak, according to investigative reporter Diane Dimond.

“Frankly I’m worried that Wendy won’t get out of guardianship because when a judge sets guardianship, it’s usually for life,” he said.

Book author We’re Here to Help: When Caregiver Goes Wrong also claims that the government seems to care only about “putting people with money in care,” just like Williams.

He also revealed that his nearly decade-long investigation has shown that “judges ignore family members and friends” in favor of “profit appointees” who are “strangers” in the ward.

As for Williams’ current location, he is living in a facility for cognitive impairment after he suffered a breakdown last year in April.

According to Wanda, Williams is now in an “emotional place of healing” and is no longer the extraordinary person her upcoming documentary portrays.

“I don’t know what worked, but I do know that when he called me, it was a very different person than what we saw in the documentary,” Wanda added, per People.

Williams’ nephew, Alex Finnie, also claims that his aunt is making a remarkable recovery, and that he hasn’t heard her sound this good in years.

He continued, “To listen to my aunt now in terms of how articulate she is, how focused she is on the importance of family and reality in terms of facing and understanding where she is physically and mentally and emotionally, it’s like a 180.”
