With an election year approaching and Congress wrapping up its business for 2023, the White House circulated a memo on Monday accusing Republicans of pushing weak economic policies and an “extreme” political agenda — prompting a backlash from the Capitol Hill GOP.
“For the past three years, the president has overseen a historic crisis on our Southern border, which can be traced directly to administration policy,” Raj Shah, deputy chief of staff for communications to House Speaker Mike Johnson, told The Post.
Shah also cited “huge inflation that has forced the average family to pay over $11,400 in higher costs, and weak foreign policy that has strengthened America’s enemies around the world.”
“Far from progress, the president’s record has been a disaster for the American people,” he added.
A message from the Biden administration’s communications director, Ben LaBolt, celebrated the Biden administration for “delivering meaningful progress for hard-working Americans in 2023.”

The four-page memo touted year-long efforts to raise wages, eliminate so-called “junk fees,” reduce unemployment and reduce prescription drug and energy costs, along with passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, which has been hailed as “the largest investment in climate action ever.”
“Meanwhile, extreme Congressional Republicans are showing every day that they have no plan to lower costs for families. Their only plan is a trillion-dollar tax cut for the wealthiest Americans and the biggest corporations, burdening taxpayers with more debt,” LaBolt’s memo said.
“They want to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act [to] try to block this Administration from reducing the cost of insulin and prescription drugs and undo the progress we’ve made in clean energy. They’re still trying to cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid,” he added.

The memo comes as Senate Republicans are still negotiating with the White House on an additional $106 billion national security package to help enforce Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and US borders, with negotiations expected to extend into next year.
GOP senators have set the course on reforms to asylum policy, among other considerations, after more than 2.47 million immigrants entered the country through the southwest border in fiscal year 2023, US Customs and Border Protection data show.
House Republicans have already begun their holiday break after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assured Johnson (R-La.) in a closed-door meeting that military aid would not run out before the end of the year.

Monday’s memo, which did not mention the issue of immigration, renewed some of the points the White House discussed before Thanksgiving that emphasized reductions over the past year in gas and travel spending, grocery prices and other costs for consumers.
Biden, 81, oversaw 40-year high inflation last year, but the White House has insisted that American workers’ wages remain higher than their pre-pandemic levels.
Republicans and conservative commentators have countered that real wages, meaning workers’ wages adjusted for inflation, have declined by several percentage points since the president took office.

“President Biden’s economic record is so bad that he will never put his name on it again,” said Senate GOP Conference Chairman John Barrasso (R-Wyo.). “Bidenomics sent prices to record highs and presidential approval ratings to record lows. Joe Biden is a high-priced president, and the American people will make him pay the price in November.”
“Americans are paying far more for food and other necessities than they have in generations, our southern border has been opened to a tsunami of illegal immigration and human trafficking, and President Biden is scrambling to send billions of our tax dollars to foreign countries,” the Senator added. Mike Lee (R-Utah.). “American families deserve better leadership.”
Biden’s approval rating hit one of the lowest numbers of his administration this month, when a Monmouth University poll found just 34% approved of his job performance, compared to 61% who disapproved.
Vice President Kamala Harris enjoys a slightly higher 37% approval rating, with 57% disapproving of her job performance.
