It wasn’t long before KTLA star anchor Lynette Romero quit the station, and now the news network is firing her friend Mark Mester. Mark’s termination comes days after he was suspended following an off-script segment in which he criticized the station’s handling of Lynette Romero’s sudden departure, several employees at the station said.

KTLA general manager Janene Drafs announced the firing in a brief speech during a newsroom meeting around 1:15 p.m., saying, “[Mester] no more on KTLA5.” They have also removed his profile from their database. Mester, Romero’s co-host on the weekend morning show on Saturday, departed from the show with an emotional statement. In his apology to viewers, he expressed the station’s regret for the way Romero’s exit was handled, calling it “rude, nasty and inappropriate.”

He and his three colleagues delivered a speech for more than four minutes, with Mark’s voice occasionally wavering, he said, “You don’t deserve this, it’s a mistake, and we hope you can find it in your heart to forgive us. ” After his suspension, viewers of their show flooded Twitter.

One person wrote, “Mark is 100% in the right. It’s like you’re asking to lose all your viewers with this kind of behavior.”

Employees claimed that producers had prepared a script for Mark to deliver as they said goodbye to Romero, along with images and video clips from his broadcast, but Mark chose to ignore them during the segment. Additionally, he had paid for an airplane to fly over the station carrying a banner that read, “We love you, Lynette.”

Mark tried to convince the producers to use the plane footage in the program, but he was refused. Staff said they saw Mester pacing with an angry face before stepping onto the set for Saturday’s segment. He gave his social media followers a heads up that he planned to address Romero’s passing on the morning show.

People in the newsroom claimed that after his program, they observed Mark declining an invitation from management to enter their office for a meeting. Mark allegedly told one of the news directors to “shut up” at one point, and when ordered to leave the building, Mester allegedly refused.
