An Oklahoma woman recently opened up about how her Apple Watch saved her life two years ago after first detecting a heart problem she thought was nothing.
Judith Luebke was informed by her watch one Thursday evening in January 2021 that she had A-fib, or atrial fibrillation, a condition caused by very fast and irregular beats of the upper chambers of the heart.
Luebke didn’t think much of it because he had an abnormal heartbeat since then and believed his current condition could be attributed to stress caused by the recent loss of his partner.
As he prepared for his remote work the next day, Luebke thought about seeing the doctor but figured he was busy that day and could put it off until next week.
”I talked to my boss that morning.. and said, ‘you know, I have a meeting this morning. Maybe I’ll see a doctor after that, maybe I will, maybe I won’t — maybe I’ll wait for the weekend’,” Luebke told KSWO.
His boss didn’t let him go with that thought, urging him to see a doctor immediately,
“He said ‘you have to go now’,” a request that ultimately saved him when he found out he had diabetes when he visited the hospital that day.
Judith Luebke said she was notified by her watch in 2021 that she was in A-fib, but didn’t really think it was related to stress.KSWO Apple Watches use a green LED light paired with a light-sensitive photodiode to detect the amount of blood flowing through the wrist you at any time and displays the heart rate on the screen for the user to see.KSWO
Along with the diagnosis of diabetes, doctors discovered that he had very high blood sugar, a combination that could be fatal if not treated immediately.
“If I had waited for the weekend, I probably wouldn’t have survived,” he said. “That’s what I would do if I didn’t get notifications on my watch. I just thought about everything that happened, I don’t feel well, and I will see a doctor when I see a doctor.”
With a clear head following his treatment, Luebke realized how bad his condition was and concluded that his smartwatch saved his life, so he sent an email to Apple CEO Tim Cook, telling his story.

Cook responded the same day, saying he was happy to hear from Luebke and to know the technology helped save his life, according to the outlet.
Luebke’s daughter Shannon Bowers is also grateful for the watch, as it saved her mother’s life.
“I don’t know what I would have done without him. If it wasn’t for the watch, and if it weren’t for the people in his life — his boss and his other colleagues — telling him ‘no, you have to come in, and listen to him, he wouldn’t be at here,” Bowers said.

Luebke added that his watch will now always be on his wrist.
“I will never go without a smart watch again.. it literally saved my life.”
