Zaya Wade feels lucky to have Gabrielle Union as her biggest cheerleader.
The 15-year-old daughter of former NBA stars Dwyane Wade and Siohvaughn Funches found her strongest ally in her father and stepmother, Union, when she publicly came out as trans in 2019 at age 12.

“The lesson has changed over time, but recently, the beauty is in you. It’s about being you and expressing yourself the way you want to. She tried to teach me that beauty standards are arbitrary and they mean nothing.”
Zaya then mentions what she has gathered so far about standards and self-acceptance. In his words, “They don’t matter anymore; what people think of as the standard is not. And just being myself is the best technique out there.”

Union’s inspirational message to Zaya was especially touching, given her birth against a legal petition made by her father to allow an official name and gender change.
Last November, Siohvaughn filed a petition opposing her ex-partner’s initial request. He did not support the name and gender change for his daughter, claiming that Zaya was pressured by the adults in his life for financial gain.
Siohvaughn, who does not have custody of her two children, argued on the basis of parental consultation, saying that Dwyane “will consult with and obtain input into major decisions affecting the care, welfare, activities, health, education and religious upbringing” of their children. before any important life-changing decisions.
However, the court finally approved the name and gender change last month. Court documents obtained by The Blast detail, “Petition for Recognition of Gender Change and Issuance of New Birth Certificate filed by Zion Malachi Airamis Wade, by and through gal, Dwyane T. Wade, Jr. on 22/08/2022 Granted in part.”
The statement continued, “Decree signed and filed. Petitioner’s name changed from Zion Malachi Airamis Wade to Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade. Petitioner’s gender is changed from male to female.” According to court documents, Zaya will be issued a new birth certificate with her new name and gender.
