Massive weekend storm to pummel eastern US with heavy rain, damaging winds, snow

A developing storm system will deliver widespread rain, damaging winds, severe blizzards and even snow to the eastern half of the US this weekend.

“While there are still some things that need to be worked out in terms of timing, it will deliver everything,” Fox Weather meteorologist Britta Merwin said. “But it all depends on placement and timing.”

The Fox Prediction Center is expecting a fairly disruptive storm that will affect millions of Americans, create travel problems and lead to power outages along the East Coast.

“It’s a December weekend with travel, and Atlanta is right in the crosshairs,” Merwin said. “You can do the math on that one.”

This comes as a trough of low pressure moves out of the western US on Friday, triggering the development of a surface low in the central Plains. This early low will kick off an event with heavy rain and some snow in the Upper Midwest by Saturday, the Fox Forecast Center said.

Widespread heavy rain spread to the East

A wide area of moderate to heavy rain is likely to occur from Friday from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes and eastward to the East Coast.

Flash flooding will be a concern along the Gulf Coast into the mid-Mississippi and lower Ohio valleys on Saturday, while the threat shifts eastward from the Florida Panhandle to the mid-Atlantic and much of the Northeast on Sunday.

The rapid movement of this system will help limit the amount of rain. However, significant moisture and enough instability will still support rainfall rates high enough to produce some flooding concerns, the Fox Forecast Center said.

Dangerous high winds will hit Sunday, Monday

Gusty winds are likely across parts of the Rockies and Plains on Saturday due to a significant pressure difference between the undulating cold front and strong high pressure in the interior West. Wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph are expected in this area.

Strong winds are expected along the mid-Atlantic and New England coasts on Sunday and possibly on Monday, with gusts of 50 to 70 mph possible near the coast.

These wind speeds may be high enough to cause major travel problems at major airport hubs over the weekend, and power outages may occur in several states.

Snow is expected in the Great Lakes, inland Northeast

Some snow will occur on the northwest side of the lowlands from the north-central Plains and Midwest to the Great Lakes on Saturday, but the details are still uncertain, the Fox Forecast Center said. Some snow may also fall after the system passes, especially over the Great Lakes and into the Appalachians.

There are signs that cold air arriving behind Sunday night’s storm could result in a blast of heavy snow inland in the Northeast.

Snow accumulation becomes increasingly likely in northern New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine during certain periods. However, the Fox Prediction Center explained that, at this time, it is difficult to predict exactly where, when and how much snow will fall.

“Corridor 95, it’s a bust if you like snow. It’s pro if you like the 60s, but it’s going to come with rain,” Merwin said. “Sunday, although it will be mild, you will be in your house. Sunday night, we started to calm down, but still above freezing for the 95 corridor.”

Threat of severe weather in the South

This storm will also bring the potential for severe weather in the South.

The Fox Forecast Center said several severe storms are possible Friday night in parts of the Ark-La-Tex region and near the Ozarks as moisture flows in from the Gulf of Mexico.

By Saturday, with sufficient moisture and strong wind shear – a change in wind speed and direction with height – occurring, the threat of greater thunderstorms could materialize. Tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail will all occur from East Texas to Louisiana, Arkansas, western Mississippi and western Tennessee.

“We probably won’t see the development of that traditional supercell,” Merwin said. “But when you get a line of thunderstorms, and you’re tracking mainly wind threats, sometimes we can have a tornado spin up along that path. And they are cunning. It happened fast.”

It appears some severe weather threats will remain as the overall system moves further east Sunday, according to the Fox Forecast Center. Computer forecast models suggest the central and eastern Carolinas to the Delmarva Peninsula may be at risk for several strong to severe storms.
