A horrifying video captured a staff member at the Israeli Embassy in Beijing being stabbed on the sidewalk Friday — the day the former Hamas leader called on all Muslims to launch a “day of Jihad.”
The 50-year-old staffer was seen repeatedly stabbed by the male attacker after a brief struggle as he lay on the pavement, according to a video posted on social media and geolocated by Agence France-Presse to an area about a mile from the embassy.
“An Israeli employee at the Israeli embassy in Beijing was attacked today,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“The worker is being treated in hospital and is in a stable condition. The motive for the attack is being investigated.”
Beijing police said they had arrested a 53-year-old foreign man in a brutal attack on the victim, who they described as a family member of an Israeli diplomat.

The 30-second clip shows the man with the knife wrestling the victim on the ground and stabbing him several times, leaving a trail of blood on the pavement, as passers-by look on.
The video then shows the victim and the attacker, who appears to be limping, walking away from the scene.
People working in the area said they heard the victim screaming as police cars and ambulances arrived.
The stabbing came as Muslims around the world took to the streets in mass protests against Israel’s heavy bombing campaign in Gaza, following an unprecedented and deadly Hamas attack nearly a week ago.
“We are appalled by today’s attack on an Israeli diplomat in Beijing,” US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns wrote on X.

He said he had spoken with his Israeli counterpart, Ambassador Irit Ben-Abba, and offered “Washington’s full support to the Israeli embassy and the Israeli community in China.”
The attack came after Israel criticized China for its remarks following a Hamas attack on the Jewish state on Saturday.
Shortly before making the announcement, the Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that Ambassador Rafi Harpaz had spoken with China’s envoy for the Middle East, Zhai Jun, to express his country’s “deep disappointment” over China’s comments.
“There is no clear and firm condemnation of the terrible massacres committed by the terrorist organization Hamas against innocent civilians and the abduction of dozens of them to Gaza,” the statement said.

“China’s announcement does not contain any element of Israel’s right to defend itself and its people, a fundamental right of any sovereign nation to be attacked in an unprecedented manner and with cruelty that has no place in human society,” he added.
Asked about Israel’s statement, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that China opposes actions that harm civilians and violate international law.
“China will continue to work tirelessly to defuse the situation and resume peace talks,” he said.
China said in an earlier statement that Beijing was “deeply concerned by the escalation of tension and violence between Israel and Palestine and saddened by the civilian casualties caused by the conflict.”

“China condemns the actions that harm innocent civilians, and calls for an early ceasefire and an end to violence, and resuming negotiations for peace based on a two-state solution to increase the confidence of both peoples in achieving peace,” the statement said.
US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, meeting with Chinese leaders in Beijing earlier this week, expressed displeasure with China’s initial statement on the Hamas attack.
He later said he was satisfied when a Foreign Ministry spokesman later added that China was “deeply saddened by the civilian casualties” and “opposes and condemns actions that harm civilians.”
In Beijing on Friday, several plainclothes police were stationed outside the Israeli Embassy in addition to the usual contingent of uniformed officers.

About a mile away at the Palestinian Embassy, plainclothes officers were also on hand and one was tightening wire on the fence.
The former leader of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, has called on all Muslims to launch a “Jihad day” and hold protests.
He called on Muslims to hold a global demonstration in support of the Palestinians, urging the Muslim world to “take to the squares and streets of the Arab and Muslim world on Friday.”
Meshaal said, “All scholars who teach jihad … to all who teach and learn, this is the moment for application [of jihad].”
