Tropical storm warnings are in place across New England as weather conditions are expected to begin deteriorating late Friday as Hurricane Lee makes its closest approach.
Boston could see sustained tropical-storm-force winds overnight, and locals fear the heavy winds and rain could snap branches and limbs and down power lines, leaving thousands in the dark.
A state of emergency was proactively declared in Maine as the state faces its worst hurricane threat in nearly 15 years.
“We are tracking the storm’s path and coordinating with federal and local partners to prepare for its arrival,” Governor Janet Mills said in a statement. “We urge Maine people to be vigilant and take common sense steps to ensure they have everything they need to stay safe as the storm approaches through the weekend.”
The NHC said Lee will continue to weaken as it moves into a more uncertain environment including wind shear, drier air and cooler waters.
However, Lee’s large size and expected increased forward speed suggest the weakening process may be slow, and the storm will continue to grow in size as it continues to spin north.
The hurricane is expected to become extratropical – meaning the storm will no longer need to draw its power from warm waters.

Based on the hurricane’s direction, Maine and the Canadian provinces are expected to experience the worst weather but due to the storm’s breadth, the impact will be felt hundreds of miles from the center.
Coastal communities from Florida to Maine are already bearing the brunt of the hurricane in the form of rough seas and the Fernandina Beach Police Department in Florida said it found the body of a swimmer swept away by strong currents.
The heart of the hurricane was more than 700 miles away when swimmers likely encountered rip currents and did not resurface while in the ocean along Northeast Florida.

People living in New England still have days to prepare for any possible impacts and power outages that Lee will have in the region before the weather begins to deteriorate on Friday.
“We could still see a 24-hour stretch where you might not have power which means everything in your fridge is going to break,” Merwin said. “Your food cannot last 24 hours without electricity to your refrigerator. So, maybe buy a few things at the store in the next few days that you can eat and not worry about keeping in the fridge.”
